Pastor Stephen Answers Call and Chooses to be Commissioned

As a young person, Stephen Lundquist had plans to follow in his family’s footsteps by physically healing people through health-care.

But God had different ideas.

Later, Stephen attended Upper Columbia Academy where he was chosen by his fellow students to speak for a Week of Prayer service. That experience jolted his plans towards medicine. He was met with a clear call to spiritually heal others through ministry. It was followed by years of study, education, missionary work, seminary, ministerial work, and, eventually, teaching.

Pastor Stephen officially answered God’s call at a recent Commissioning to Service ceremony at PAA. Family, friends, mentors, colleagues and PAA students gathered around our beloved Pastor Stephen as he accepted this honor.

“What a powerful idea to understand,” said Al Reimche, President of the Oregon Conference of Seventh-day Adventists. “God is the one that chose you, Stephen. From the beginning you were called.  And God’s desire to shine through you is already happening here at PAA.”

Pastor Stephen’s decision to disciple young people through Adventist education was made after careful reflection. He has served in many ministerial roles including Associate Pastor at Sunnyside Seventh-day Adventist Church, Youth Pastor at Pleasant Valley Seventh-day Adventist Church, and as a volunteer Youth Pastor at a church in Auckland, New Zealand. But there was something special about education.

“I had so many teachers who made such a profoundly positive impact on me,” he says. “If I can pass that gift on to my students than I have done my job.”

This school year marks his seventh as a teaching pastor making daily profound impacts in the lives of PAA students. Students and staff alike are continually blessed by his decision to answer God’s call not just to the field of ministry but to educating and equipping young people with the tools to share Jesus in their world.

Pastor Stephen chose to be “Commissioned” rather then “Ordained” and President Reimche shared the difference between the two at this ceremony. A special story on Pastor Stephen’s decision was published though the Oregon Conference Communique and will also be found in a future Gleaner magazine.
