How PAA Students are Helping Refugees In Colombia

Practical application of what students are learning is part of PAA’s growth as a Project Based Learning school. Coupled with Mission Focused Learning, students are growing their Christ-centered and character-driven values from the inside out.

Portland Adventist Academy Spanish teacher, Rita Barrett, or Profe as she is known to her students, is known for unique ways of helping students acquire the language.

This year, Profe’s students have been working to memorize Bible verses in Spanish as well as hand-writing them on decorative cards.

And as a practical application exercise, she decided to team up with a friend to give her students a reason for writing out their memory verses.

“My friend Bethani is in Colombia helping Venezuelan refugees,” says Profe.

“She has been giving walkers very small monetary gifts (about $3) in envelopes with hand-written Bible verses.”

(FYI, Bethani is doing a lot more than that! Read about why she founded the organization On Ground International, HERE.)

“As writer’s cramp set in, [Bethani] thought of enlisting some help from Spanish classes,” says Profe.

Great timing!

“My Spanish II and III students just began learning 1st Peter 5:7,” said Profe. “Instead of just reciting it out loud, they are writing this appropriate verse on envelopes which will be sent to Bethani in Colombia.”

Conveniently, Spanish I students are also learning an appropriate verse–Philippians 4:13.

“So I’m enlisting their help, too,” says Rita. “And to round out our contributions, I will also ask the [honor students] in Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica to share some additional verses.”
