PAA students, staff, and parents, collectively Sus Manos, under the leadership of Profe Rita Barrett, recently traveled to the Dominican Republic to serve at Las Palmas, a children’s village, partnering in 12 days of meaningful connection, learning, and hands-on support. Rooted in a desire to reflect and receive the love of Jesus, the team approached each day with purpose, humility, and open hearts.
Throughout the week, students stepped into classrooms across primary grades, assisting teachers, supporting lessons, and building relationships with children. From helping in first, second, and third grade classrooms to reading with students, guiding writing activities, and jumping in wherever needed, our group quickly became a steady and encouraging presence on campus. In both big and small moments, they sought to show Christ’s love through patience, kindness, and care.
Sus Manos took on significant responsibility, leading and supporting learning in classrooms with confidence and compassion. They also built strong connections beyond the classroom, spending time with younger children during recess and engaging with teens from the homes, communicating entirely in Spanish. Through these relationships, students experienced the joy of connection that goes beyond language and reflects the unity we have in Christ.
The parents who joined the trip also played an important role, supporting teachers and stepping in to help when classrooms faced unexpected needs. At times, the team was even called on to lead lessons, demonstrating flexibility, teamwork, and a willingness to serve wherever needed, embracing each opportunity as a way to live out their faith.
In addition to their work in classrooms, our own Profe supported a special writing project with grades 4-6 students, helping guide them through the process of creating and completing their own books. Sus Manos also provided devotional books and school supplies to teachers, offering encouragement and sharing resources that point back to Jesus.
The experience gave students a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by children at Las Palmas, many of whom come from difficult circumstances and enter school with significant gaps in their education. Through it all, our students responded with compassion, patience, and a commitment to meeting each child where they are, reflecting the heart of Christ in their actions.
It was a full and meaningful week of service, connection, and growth. As with each mission experience, our students not only made a difference in the lives of others, but were changed themselves. In serving, they more fully understood what it means to follow Jesus, to love others selflessly, and to be His hands and feet in the world.
